UTAH STATE UNIVERSITY DEE GLEN SMITH SPECTRUM ARENA DEE GLEN SMITH SPECTRUM ARENA

SPORTS ARENA
LOGAN, UTAH – MARCH 2016

THE PROJECT

The Dee Glen Smith Spectrum is a 10,270-seat sports arena on the campus of Utah State University in Logan, Utah. It is home to the Utah State Aggies men’s and women’s basketball teams as well as gymnastics, volleyball, and other sporting events. In addition to sporting events, the Smith Spectrum is utilized for concerts, commencement ceremonies, and other special events central to the Cache Valley community.

The existing lighting consisted of traditional metal halide luminaires that had been installed in when the facility was constructed in 1970.  These outdated fixtures were unable to provide the proper light levels and energy efficiency necessary for full illumination and budget needs so our team was called in to provide a much-needed upgrade to the lighting infrastructure.

THE PROCESS

The challenge for the SpecGrade team was to retrofit the existing 68 1000-watt metal halide fixtures with LED luminaires while maintaining or improving light levels and without losing the 5,000K color temperature.

THE RESULT

Our LED Lighting installation at Utah State University achieved the desired light output and coverage without losing quality or color temperature. By using our 400-watt AFL fixtures, we brought the total watt usage down from 68,000 watts to 27,200, creating a massage energy savings for the University. The dimmers allow them to save even more when hosting events in the facility that don’t call for full illumination.
