MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE A.E. WOOD COLISEUM

SPORTS ARENA
CLINTON, MS – SUMMER 2016

THE PROJECT

Mississippi College, affiliated with the Mississippi Baptist Convention, is a private, co-educational, Christian university of liberal arts and sciences serving nearly 5,000 students from 39 states and 23 countries.

A.E. Wood Coliseum, which is one of the most recognizable architectural structures in the Clinton community. The “Golden Dome” is one of 50 all gold anodized aluminum buildings in the nation. Boasting a square footage of 48,000, the Dome has a capacity of 3,500 for basketball games, 4,000 for stage events and an arena including 532 theater seats.

THE PROCESS

The challenge for the SpecGrade team was to retrofit the existing 84 1000W Metal Halide fixtures with LED luminaires while achieving an even 40fc across the court, all while minimizing the ballast noise that had been an issue. The older fixtures were burning through 84,000 watts to light each event and the college was interested in saving money on their energy costs.

THE RESULT

Our resulting installation burned only 50,400 Watts and increased the illumination throughout the entire facility. After the installation of our 84 600W AFL series fixtures, the A.E. Coliseum saved 33,600 Watts, enjoying exceptional, camera-ready white balance and 112 fc illumination levels along with the most energy efficient lighting system available on the market.
